Important Cultural and Biological Properties of Virulent and Attenuated Vaccine Strains of Bacillus anthracis for Differentiation from other Closely Related Bacillus species

Abstract
Simple biological and cultural laboratory methods for identification and differen of Bacillus anthracis from other Bacillus species were studied with a virulent strain (ATCC 14578) and two attenuated vaccine strains, Pasteur No. 2-Army and Aterne
34-F2,
of B. anthracis and soil in Shindo Isiand and Choonseong where humans and animals succumbed of unknown acute diseases.
Important cultural and biological properties of Bacillus anthracis in terms of sensitiviey and specifickty were TSI(A/-), followed by nonhemolysis and penicillin susceptibility, nonmotility, starch hydrolysis, nonutilization of citrate and
lectithinase
production and growth inhibition at 47.5 ¡¾0.5¡É. B. anthracis ATCC 14578(100%) and Sterne 34-F2 (70%) were pathogenic in mouse, whereas other strains tested including an attenuated vaccine strain, Pasteur No. 2-Army, were not Pathogenic. The
attenuated
uncapsulated vaccine strain, Sterne 34-F2, was differentiated from the attenuated encapsulated vaccine strain, Pasteur No. 2-Army, by its thermophilic growth at 45.5¡¾0.5%¡É and pathogenicity in mice.
On the basis of biological properties, the four isolates mimicking B. anthracis belonged to other Bacillus species;Rho belonged to B. mycoides, S10A to B. pumilus-circulans-brevis complex, 11R-1 to B. thuringiensis and 7451 to B. subtilis-brevis
compiex.
